Workshops

CHILDREN

Puppetry is something that all children in every culture do instinctively as a natural part of play. They don’t have to be taught how to pretend that objects can come to life, can speak in their own voices, can take on different characteristics, can have distinct personalities. They use them to tell their own stories, their own inner world, their emotions, and the best of all, they use them to resolve inner conflicts that helps to maintain themselves in healthy equilibrium. Once this is said, for children, our workshops are more about simply setting a space and time for this to happen. We only need provide the materials. We organize the process with awareness of all these elements:

Movement – connection with their bodies; sense awareness; their bodies related with the space, objects and the other…

Sculpture – form, space…

Visual – color, image…

Storytelling – beginning, middle, end; voice…

Rhythms – sounds and music…

The Ritual of Theater – now I listen, now I perform; being in community; change and transformation….

We work in many different formats – from very short (2 hours), to full week. We include ongoing formats, regular weekly sessions, etc. the more hours and the more regular, the more deep we can go. We do these workshops in English, Spanish or bilingual.

We do these workshops in schools, day care centers, children’s organizations and sometimes in our own studio in Santa Fe.

Children who play and tell their own stories are more ready for academic work and have more capacity to construct themselves and understand who they are.

ADULTS

Most adults still fondly remember their childhood fascination with puppets, even if they have not had any direct contact with this type of play for many years. Just saying the word Puppets in a group of adults invariably brings out new energy and lots of smiles. Our job is the help them to express those parts of themselves that have been dormant for so long. We use many of the same tools and formats that we do with children.
